Machynlleth Town Council was born out of local government re-organisation in 1974 and replaced the old Machynlleth Urban District Council, which in turn gave way to Montgomeryshire District Council.
When MDC set-up the Celtica project it was partly at the expense of the Town Council’s meeting chamber, and the Town Council had to leave Y Plas and take lodgings at the Owain Glyndwr Centre. There they remained until Y Plas was returned to the Town on 1 April 2008.
Today Y Plas is, to all intents and purposes, the Town Hall and the 1st floor administration office is also home to the Town Council; thus adding credence to the saying from across the pond that “what goes around, comes around”.
